History of Tamilnadu Government Dental college 

    Histroy of Dentistry in chennai dates back to 1930,when the first dental college in Chennai(at that time it was Madras) called the "Madras Dental College and Hospital".But unfortunately it was closed in 1942.Few years later in 1940s,DR.H.M.Rao, a medical practitioner obtained the DDS qualification from the USA and started "The American Dental College" in chennai.But it was also shut down after the sudden demise of the Principal ,Dr.H.M.Rao.

Dentists Act 1948

    The Indian dental association (IDA) founded in 1946 focussed on the necessity for Regulating the dental practice and this resulted in the enactment of the dentists act 1948.This was really turning poing the in field of dental education in india and introduced a regulated systematic practice of dentistry.

     The IDA, supported by the Bhore recommendations amde representation to the Government for starting a dental college in the south, at Madras.The Madras Dental Council was constituted on 2nd Feb 1951 and simultaneously petitoned the Government to initiate the BDS course.

  In December 1949, the Govt. sanctioned the opening of a separate Dental wind attached to Madras Medical College(MMC) and Governement General Hospital,Madras for training candidates for the BDS course and intake of fifteen students per year in the year 1953.

   In 1978, Dental wind was separted from Madras Medical College and the inauguration of Madras Dental College was done by his Excellency Prabhudas Patwari the Governor of Tamilnadu on 26th February 1980.Dr.B.P.Rajan was appointed as The Principal.Today many of the students graduated from this prestigious institution are faculties in leading institutions in the world,serving in Govt hospitals ,defence services and Indian Administrative services.

   In the year 1992,the institution was renamed as Tamilnadu Government Dental College and Hospital and affiliated to The Tamilnadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University,chennai.
